Woman's suicide linked to boyfriend's murder

BREA, Calif. According to police, Beth Jia, a 53-year-old of Alhambra, shot herself when officers stopped her vehicle in El Monte. She was taken to /*L.A. County-USC Medical Center*/ and was pronounced dead.

Jia had been identified as a possible suspect in the murder of a man she had been dating. A search of her home Saturday turned up ammunition and other materials consistent with evidence located at the murder scene, according to investigators.

Detectives went to an apartment complex at 11311 Elliot Avenue in El Monte on Sunday where Jia had been staying.

While investigators waited for a search warrant, about 8 p.m., she got into her car and began driving away. That's when detectives stopped her, and they heard a single gunshot.

The .38-caliber revolver was registered to Jia, and investigators say it is the same caliber used to kill her boyfriend.

The identity of the 63-year-old man has not been released. He was found shot to death at his home in the 1000 block of Grand Canyon Road in Brea on May 7.
