But, of course, there is more than meets the eye.
Behind the gates are homes filled with vampires and other supernatural characters.
Despite these otherworldly elements, star Rhona Mitra says what sets this show apart is its realistic vibe.
"I think that this is set in a place that really could exist," says Mitra, who plays Claire, an avid cook, mother, wife and vampire. "The idea is that these creatures, supernatural or otherwise, could actually have a place in our society.
Rhona thinks it will be more fun for viewers to remain a bit in the dark about what they'll expect from "The Gates," but she does think the show has experience one good omen.
"We shot our first evening and it was kind of ominous and fantastic because there was a full moon, so we were all very excited about that," she said.
"The Gates" premieres at 10 p.m. on ABC 7.
