Santa Ana police chief gets piece of history

The Bowers Museum presented Chief Paul Walters with a replica of the sheriff's badge worn in 1877 by the first town marshal of Santa Ana.

He was honored for his nearly 40-year career with the department. He has been police chief for the last 22 years.

Walters happily accepted the badge of honor. "As police officers you always want to know about the history and the forefathers and what happened and those that went before you and you're always looking to the future to try to make things better," he said.

The original badge is on display in the museum along with some 150 other rare artifacts in the current "Weird and Wonderful" exhibit.
