BELL, Calif. --
State auditors spoke to Bell residents Monday, telling them their political leaders mismanaged tens of millions of dollars of the city's money. Much of it was to pay themselves extravagant salaries.Assemblyman Hector De La Torre said he scheduled the hearing because he wanted to give residents of the working-class city a full account of what had happened.
About 300 residents filled a school auditorium to hear auditors from the state Controller's office speak about Bell officials.
Auditors said city leaders had collected $6.8 million over the last three years by illegally raising property taxes, sewer assessment fees and business licenses.
