Sinkhole nearly swallows car in Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. Brenda Majano's 1998 Neon needs some body work and repairs under the hood after it nearly ended up underground.

The sinkhole, roughly 10-feet deep and 15-by-12-feet wide, opened in the exact spot where parked her car.

The Los Angeles Fire Department hoisted her car out of the hole and evacuated about 250 people from the apartments nearby as a precaution.

However, the gas lines were not a threat to the neighborhood.

As for how the sinkhole was formed, last week's heavy rain may have caused the road to cave.

The fire department did find soil erosion.

Majano is just relieved she wasn't in her car when the road gave way. She's not sure how she's getting to her job in eagle rock tomorrow, but she's already given her boss a head's up.

"She didn't believe me at first but I sent her some pictures and I'm excused," Majano said.

Most residents of the apartment building returned to their home.
