Insomnia treatment forgoes taking pills

LOS ANGELES It may sound counterintuitive, but they say spending less time in bed is the key.

When patients began a program of short-term behavioral therapy, more than half overcame their chronic sleep problems.

The therapy consisted of an hour-long session with a psychologist, a half-hour follow-up and a few phone calls.

The key message? Get out of bed if you're sleeping poorly. Many insomniacs lie awake worrying about getting to sleep, which can lead to an expectation of sleep problems.
