Fredy Hernandez, 31, was convicted on Jan. 20 of the second-degree murder of 24-year-old Doris Salguero. Jurors found true an allegation that the defendant personally used an ice pick as a weapon.
Prosecutors said Hernandez confronted the victim following a holiday gathering. The exchange culminated on Dec. 20, 2009, with Hernandez stabbing Salguero 21 times in the chest and back.
The victim's body was discovered in her car the next day in the Winnetka by her brother who was driving around the area in search of Salguero.
