Compton parents vow to fight for charter

COMPTON, Calif.

"There's no way they're going to stop us," said parent Ismenia Guzman. "We want this because we want a better solution for our kids."

The parents of McKinley Elementary School had filed a parent-trigger petition to make the move, but the Compton school board unanimously rejected it on Tuesday night.

"We're not giving up. We've come a long way to stop now. We're going to take it to court and see what's going to happen next," said parent Shemika Murphy.

Parents claim the board used technicalities to dismiss the petition.

McKinley ranks in the bottom 10 percent of elementary schools statewide.
