The top three spots in the California Academic Decathlon went to schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Students from the Granada Hills Charter High School won first place and will now represent California at the National Academic Decathlon next month in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The San Fernando Valley school's win was announced Monday after two days of intense competition.

John Marshall High School in the Los Feliz-area ranked second and last year's national winner, El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, was third.

A record 11 LAUSD schools made it to Sacramento for the competition.
