A nearly 7-pound gold nugget found in Nevada County, Calif. sold for $400,000 Wednesday night.

An anonymous bidder purchased the gold rock during an auction in Sacramento.

The gold was found last year and is believed to be the largest California gold nugget left in existence.

The unusual size of the nugget and its historical value raised the final price to well over its actual pure gold value.

The unidentified buyer must also pay the auction house $60,000.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
