The United Airlines flight returned to the New Orleans airport within minutes of taking off after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.
The plane ran off the runway during the landing. As soon as the plane was on the ground, flight attendants shouted "Leave everything. Get out!"
All 100 passengers on board exited on the emergency chute. A few people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
