Women who take calcium supplements may have an increased risk of heart attacks, new research suggests

A study recently published in the British Medical Journal found that calcium supplements have increased heart attacks by more than 20 percent in post-menopausal women.

Researchers suspect the extra calcium may rapidly elevate blood calcium levels, which could contribute to artery disease.

Experts say it's important to discuss the risks and benefits of calcium supplements with your doctor, especially if you have a history of heart disease.
