Brush fire breaks out on Catalina Island

A small brush fire broke out on Catalina Island on Monday afternoon, threatening a few buildings.

A small brush fire broke out on Catalina Island on Monday afternoon, threatening a few buildings.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen from the Orange County coast.

The fire was reported at 2:46 p.m. in the area behind the Catalina Yacht Club. Forty acres of brush were destroyed.

Officials said the blaze started in a sparsely populated area of the island.

The fire was 30 percent contained late Monday, and firefighters were working through the night to tamp out hotspots.

No structures have been damaged and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
