Boot camp in pool offers intense workout

LOS ANGELES

"I have taken regular boot camp, and this definitely kicks your butt in a different way," said Los Angeles resident Melissa Hirsch.

Hirsch is talking about Boot Camp H2O.

"I think the beauty of it is that it's low impact, it works your total body every single day, it builds your lung capacity, so that actually helps everything else that you do," said Murli Bulswar of Beverly Hills.

It also lowered Bulswar's body fat substantially.

The fitness pros who created the pool program are physical therapist Egor Porciuncula and swimming expert Lana Shapiro.

"You can do 10 times more stuff in the water then you can on land. So if you can't do a pushup, you can do 10 pushups in the pool," said Shapiro.

Porciuncula said one of the big benefits is low impact on the joints.

"You can do like a million squat jumps and lunges and your knees and your hips don't have that much pressure ," said Porciuncula.

But first they hit the deck to get a hardcore workout. Literally, it's hard on the core, then cap and goggle time for warm up, cardio, strength training and more.

"We have some equipment- resistance equipment- that creates resistance on your ankle and your wrist," said Porciuncula.

There are medicine balls and real weights. They offer both beginner and intermediate, but make no mistake- this is no water ballet or sissy splash. It's a wicked water workout.

If you're going to do a water workout, you're going to need some swimming skills for safety. This particular boot camp is going to at least have you swim 100 yards swimming face down. You also need to dive down seven feet and be able to tread in water.

"Most of our clients are super in shape and have had a back injury or a knee injury," said Shapiro. "They're usually the athletes who have gotten injured and just want an alternative."

Boot Camp H2O is located in the Westside JCC Pool at Olympic Boulevard, two blocks east of Fairfax in the heart of Los Angeles, and it will be expanding to new locations.
