Breastfeeding may substantially reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Researchers analyzed 18 case-control studies on breastfeeding and SIDS risk.

They found that any breastfeeding had a 45 percent reduction in the risk of SIDS.

They also found that breastfeeding as the sole source of nutrition for any duration had a 73 percent reduction in SIDS risk.

The study is in the July issue of "Pediatrics."
