Suicidal man dies in Garden Grove police standoff

GARDEN GROVE, Calif.

Officers found a man in the back yard of the residence armed with a handgun.

Family members told police the man was upset over a medical condition and was threatening to kill himself.

Police secured the yard and called for a police negotiator to talk to the 76-year-old Caucasian man.

As police tried to talk to the man, he pointed his weapon at officers and a shooting ensued, according to the Garden Grove Police Dept.

The man died. The cause of death was not determined Friday afternoon, but the department said the man apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He also displayed injuries resulting from impacts from less-than-lethal weapons, according to the department.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office is conducting an investigation into the incident, as is standard procedure with all officer-involved shootings.
