NYC celebrates 85th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

NEW YORK

Millions of spectators lined the route to watch a parade of stars, including singer Mary J. Blige, along with marching bands, floats and of course Santa Claus.

But perhaps the biggest stars in attendance were the 40 giant balloons. Kermit the Frog, Mickey Mouse, Spider Man and an inaugural appearance by a creation from Tim Burton were among the many characters to float along the Manhattan sky.

There was some concern earlier this week that wind gusts in the area might ground the balloons. Parade rules ban balloons from flying if gusts are over 34 mph. But weather permitted and everything went off without a hitch.

The first Macy's Parade was held in 1924.
