New research shows that statins could increase survival rates for patients who are hospitalized with serious cases of influenza.

Statins are drugs used to treat cholesterol.

Researchers from the Oregon Public Health Division analyzed federal data and found that patients who were on statins while being treated for the flu were twice as likely to survive as those who didn't.

However, researchers say clinical trials are needed before any doctors start prescribing statins as flu treatment.
