The railway maintenance will continue for several weeks. A re-opening date was not announced.
Railway fare has remained at 25 cents since the rail re-opened in 1996. However, railway president John H. Welborne said it may re-open with a 50-cent fare after the completion of maintenance, with a 25-cent discount for Metro pass holders.
The maintenance will focus on the rehabilitation and replacement of the railway's steel track and related track parts. The carpentry and painting work on the approximately 100-year-old cars, Olivet and Sinai, are also expected to be addressed.
January is a period of lower passenger patronage at the railway, so the biennial maintenance will take place during the remainder of the month.
The present track was installed in late 1995. That year also brought the installation of all-new steel wheels on the two cars, which were replaced again in June 2011.
Angels Flight commemorated the railways' 110th anniversary on December 31 with a penny fare, which was the original cost to ride the rail in 1901.
