Sustained winds on campus clocked in at 32 to 48 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 mph, causing administrators to issue an alert and campus-wide shut down.
"It was actually hard to get to class. I had to run kind of to get past the wind," La'Wanda Hodges of Victorville said.
Students were notified about the campus closure at about 10 a.m. through email, Twitter and by phone.
"It's pretty scary because there are a lot of trees on campus so you get the risk of a branch coming off and hitting you. None of the trees have fallen over yet, but it's always a risk," said Ricardo Rodriguez of Fontana.
Strong winds blew through the Inland Empire and other parts of Southern California. In the Malibu Hills, wind gusts were seen over 50 mph.
High wind warnings were issued across the mountain areas, with 60-mph gusts expected. A red-flag warning is also in effect for the Southland because of the dry and warm conditions.
