Liu was held without bail. He was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday afternoon. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made as the case moves closer to trial, according to the D.A.'s Office.

Liu's wife Chenyan Bao, 39, was killed Sunday at the couple's Monterey Park residence. Police responding to a 911 call about 7 a.m. discovered the body of the woman in a house in the 1000 block of Ynez Avenue in Monterey Park. Bao was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman died from "asphyxia due to neck compression," according to the coroner's office.

Detectives said the couple has a 2-year-old child now in the custody of the Dept. of Family and Children Services.

The couple from China was renting a room at the house where the killing allegedly took place.
