Gary Monahan has served as mayor of the Orange County city on three separate occasions. Friday, he informed the city that he is leaving his post next Tuesday.
Monahan will continue to serve on the Costa Mesa City Council.
The veteran politician came under fire last year when he held a St. Patrick's Day party at a bar he owns after a city worker jumped to his death at City Hall after that worker was notified he was losing his job.
