Afghan earthquake: Up to 100 feared dead; 20+ houses buried

KABUL, Afghanistan

An Afghan provincial governor says more than 20 houses have been buried in a landslide. Rescuers have so far pulled two women's bodies from the rubble of the landslide in Baghlan province.

The massive landslide of mud and rocks buried houses so deep that rescuers gave up trying to use shovels to dig through the buried buildings, a police official said.

The quake, which hit the Hindu Kush region, was felt as far away as the Afghan capital, where it shook buildings.

The U.N. said in a statement that it was working with local authorities to try to help in the rescue effort but did not provide details.
