LAUSD bans polystyrene trays in cafeterias

LOS ANGELES

School officials and students who pushed for the ban announced the change Wednesday afternoon.

The district joins the city and county of Los Angeles and other counties across California in banning the use of polystyrene food containers in government buildings.

Opponents of the ban, including the California Restaurant Association and American Chemistry Council, argue that finding alternative packaging will lead to higher costs for consumers and that the alternative containers may be just as bad for the environment.
