Residential no-smoking law passes Santa Monica City Council

SANTA MONICA, Calif.

The Santa Monica City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night making it illegal for new apartment and condominium tenants to smoke in their units.

The ordinance forces landlords to ask current tenants to designate their residences smoking, non-smoking or decline-to-state units. If residents don't register their domiciles, they lose the right to smoke.

The City Council did not specify when the law goes into effect.
