NRC denies request to keep San Onofre nuclear plant closed until license changed

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission met Thursday in Maryland and denied FOE's request to keep the nuclear plant closed until its operating license is changed.

The FOE says their request will be reviewed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's staff and the agency's Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. The environmental group wants Southern California Edison to go through a licensing amendment process for new steam generators, before the plant can restart.

The nuclear plant was shut down in January after a leak was detected in one of its reactors.
