2 Vietnam-era grenades detonated in South LA

SOUTH LOS ANGELES

The incident was reported around 12 p.m. in the 400 block of East 70th Street. A new homeowner found what authorities describe as two rusty Vietnam-era hand grenades with pins still in them in a fire pit while the homeowner was cleaning up the backyard.

Both grenades were detonated shortly before 4 p.m. Residents of about 20 evacuated homes were evacuated for about three hours.

"It was pretty scary," said resident Bobette Phillips. "You don't expect to come home and see something like that or hear something like that and see your street all cordoned off."
