Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa highlights city's lower crime rates

"Every single LAPD bureau has experienced a reduction in crime when compared with this time last year. And everybody, these numbers, these statistics, they speak volumes about the work of our police department," said Villaraigosa.

Speaking at LAPD headquarters, Villaraigosa said Los Angeles was the only one of the top 10 cities in the state to show a drop in major crimes so far this year.

Overall, citywide violent crime dropped 12.5 percent. There has been a 13.5 percent decrease in the number of homicides. Gang-related crimes also declined by 21.5 percent. Gang-related homicides declined by about 30 percent.
