Families in Boyle Heights were forced to flee their homes after Molotov cocktails were thrown at their apartment buildings.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire on Crusado Lane and Vanegas Lane at the Ramona Gardens housing project at about 12:45 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found that at least two Molotov cocktails had been thrown at two apartment buildings.

One of the Molotov cocktails broke through a window and ignited curtains inside a unit; the other hit the building and bounced off the wall. Fire officials say one of the fire bombs looked like a bottle with a sock lit on fire.

A motive has not been determined. Arson investigators and the LAPD are investigating the incident.
