Homeless shelters brace for cold weekend in Santa Clarita

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) -- As temperatures are forecasted to drop to the mid-30s by Saturday in Santa Clarita, homeless shelters are preparing for an influx of those in need seeking warmth.

There are more than 40,000 homeless in Los Angeles County and many are worried about how they will deal with the dropping temperatures.

"It makes me really sad to think about the people laying down on the ground wrapped all up in blankets and it's raining and it's cold," Sadie Parker of Lancaster said.

The Bridge to Home shelter in Santa Clarita opened its doors early this year as officials estimated up to 1,000 people in the city could be homeless.

"This year the county is concerned over the coming inclement weather from the El Nino so we opened up the ninth of November," Tim Davis, executive director of Bridge to Home said.

The shelter located at 23031 Drayton Street opens at 6 p.m. and offers dinner, breakfast and a sack lunch before closing at 8 a.m.
