VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KABC) -- The family of a 12-year-old girl who died after being shot Wednesday evening at her home in Victorville is distraught over her sudden and tragic death.
The victim, identified as Makiya Walls, was inside the residence in the 17000 block of Monaco Drive about 8:23 p.m. when she was hit several times, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
"We were just watching TV and we heard four, big, loud pop noises -- bam, bam, bam, bam -- in sequence," said neighbor Linda Fierro. "We just thought there was a big commotion out here, a neighborhood fight or something. And they just came out screaming that somebody shot their daughter -- right through the front window."
Witnesses said the suspect, who used a shotgun to fire into the home several times, possibly left the scene in a white sedan. A description of the shooter was not available.
Makiya was transported to a trauma center in grave condition. Officials later confirmed that she died just before 10 p.m.
Distraught family members were seen outside the home, reeling from the tragedy.
"They just need to die. Who would kill a little girl?" Makiya's cousin said, wiping away tears.
The victim's mother, Maesha McCullers, said Thursday she doesn't know who committed the crime or why they did it.
"We don't know who you are yet, but please understand me when I tell you justice for my daughter will be served," she said in a message to the shooter, who remained at large. "You think you got away, honey, but God sees everything."
Thursday would have been Makiya's first day back at school. The single mother said her daughter was an honor roll student who loved her siblings and friends, and liked to pray every night.
"She was very strong in faith. I have no doubt where she is -- none whatsoever," McCullers added.
Sheriff's officials said no arrests have been made. The motive for the shooting was unknown.
