SAN PEDRO, Calif. (KABC) -- Walter, a lost sea lion pup who was rescued last week in Marina Del Rey, died Monday morning.

He was in critical condition and receiving care at the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro.

Before he was saved by Marine Animal Rescue, the emaciated pup had wandered around an apartment complex in the area for two days.

According to rescue members, many sea mammal rehabilitation centers throughout the state have been inundated with sick sea lions. Experts aren't sure what is causing the marine mammals to get sick.

The public is advised to stay away from sea lions because they can be dangerous and may bite, especially when they're distressed.
