'Brady Bunch' actress Ann B. Davis dies at 88

SAN ANTONIO (KABC) -- Ann B. Davis, best known for her role as devoted housekeeper Alice Nelson on the ABC television series "The Brady Bunch," died Sunday morning at University Hospital in San Antonio. She was 88.

The Emmy-winning actress suffered a fall at her home Saturday and never regained consciousness, according to Davis' longtime friend Bill Frey. He said Davis had lived with him and his wife, Barbara, since 1976.

Her exact cause of death was not immediately available. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

In her blue and white maid's uniform, Davis' character, Alice, was constantly cleaning up messes large and small, and she was a mainstay of stability for the family.

Davis' face occupied the center square during the show's opening credits. Her love interest was Sam the Butcher, played by Allan Melvin.

"I have lost a wonderful friend and colleague and I'm very sad," her former co-star Florence Henderson said in a statement Sunday.

Prior to her role as Alice, Davis was the razor-tongued secretary on TV sitcom "The Bob Cummings Show," which brought her two Emmys. She also appeared on Broadway and in occasional movies, including "A Man Called Peter," "Lover Come Back," and "All Hands on Deck."
