Judge lifts Navy restrictions on sonar

January 18, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
A federal judge in Los Angeles has temporarily lifted some restrictions on the use of high-power sonar during Navy training exercises off Southern California. The order follows an exemption granted by President Bush giving precedence to National Security over environmental laws. It allows the Navy to use sonar, even when whales or other marine mammals are spotted close to its ships, but not within 12 miles of the coast.

Scientists say the intense sonar can cause severe injury and even death to whales and other marine mammals.
