Defunct spy satellite falling from orbit

January 26, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
Government officials say a large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March. The officials say the satellite could contain hazardous materials and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down.

A spokesman for the National Security Council says government agencies are monitoring the situation. But he would not comment on whether it might be possible for the satellite to be shot down by a missile.

A senior government official says that lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation.
