Grapevine reopens after snow closure

CASTAIC (KABC) Snow and ice caused major problems Wednesday morning along the Grapevine. The I-5 is now open and moving slowly.

Early Wednesday morning traffic was at a complete stand still along the northbound 5 Freeway. The CHP shutdown the freeway in both directions through the Grapevine due extreme weather conditions.

Strong winds also added to dangerous driving conditions Wednesday morning. Last week bad weather shutdown the I-5 for days, but this time around it was just a matter of hours.

By 9 a.m. the CHP began running escorts through the Grapevine and finally reopened all lanes about an hour later.

Officers say that with the dangerous driving conditions they were not going to take any chances.

"This morning at around 6:15 a.m. they realized that there was ice across all lanes of the freeway up there, at the Summit. Therefore just for the safety of the motoring public we decided to shutdown the 5 Freeway again," said Officer John Lutz, CHP.

The CHP is warning the public to be aware of the driving conditions and the strong winds.
