Malibu bans plastic bags at stores

MALIBU The Malibu City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance this week that will soon make plastic bags a thing of the past.

Supermarkets and other large retailers, including drug stores and city facilities, will have six months to stop using the plastic bags or face fines up to $1,000.

Smaller vendors have up to a year.

The city of Santa Monica passed a similar ordinance in February.

Most stores already offer reusable bags.
