Nine-year-old Ryan Ramos has reunited with his mother, who remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds to her face but is recovering. His father 46-year-old Lonnie Ramos, who police say abducted Ryan last week, was killed in a car accident in Juarez.

Around 11 a.m. Sunday, investigators in Orange County got a call from Lonnie Ramos' father, who lives in Washington D.C. He said Lonnie had told him he was planning to drop Ryan off at a Mormon church in Juarez, Mexico.

Authorities found the boy alone and in good condition around noon Sunday. Ryan was taken to the U.S. consulate in Juarez before being taken across the border to El Paso. He was flown back to Orange County early Monday, where he was reunited with his family.

Police say Lonnie Ramos shot his estranged wife Gynnae in the face last Wednesday when she went to his Portola Hills home to pick up their son after a custody visit. Lonnie allegedly fled with Ryan and an Amber Alert was issued.

On Saturday after receiving a tip, police discovered a motor home that Ramos had rented near the Mexican border.

The exact circumstances of Lonnie's death are still unclear.

"Sometime after 11 o'clock there was a bad traffic accident in Juarez, Mexico, where Lonnie Ramos was killed," said Jim Amormino from the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "I don't have the exact details of the car accident, whether he was a pedestrian, whether he was in a vehicle, but I will confirm that the main suspect, Lonnie Ramos, is deceased."

Gynnae Ramos was in good condition Monday at Mission Hospital, where she was recovering from gunshot wounds to the chest, stomach and right eye, Amormino said. Her son was taken to her bedside, he said.

Police say Ryan was unaware that his mother has been shot. Apparently, he was in another location when the shooting occurred and just thought he was on an outing with his father. He was also unaware that his father had been killed in a traffic accident.
