B-1 bomber takes off from Long Beach

May 18, 2009 7:11:26 AM PDT
A B-1 bomber roared into the skies above Southern California Monday. People living beneath or near the flight path probably heard a lot of noise, and perhaps some rumbling. The enormous jet took off from the Long Beach Airport in the afternoon.

The jet used its afterburners on takeoff, making it louder than the typical airport departure.

The B-1 was at the airport since July having some maintenance repairs done.

The B-1 bomber is a supersonic-capable, swept-wing jet bomber. Sixty-seven B-1 bombers are still in use by the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force has described the B-1 as the "backbone of America's long-range bomber force."
