Oxnard makes plea to keep mail facility

OXNARD, Calif. The city council voted on Tuesday to send a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., asking her to intervene on the city's behalf. Union members also showed up at the meeting demanding that the city take a stand against the closure of the facility.

The government plans to consolidate the Oxnard center with one in Santa Clarita. But Oxnard officials say that would eliminate about 100 jobs.

The Oxnard facility handles mail for most of Ventura County and southern Santa Barbara County.

Federal officials say two separate centers are no longer needed because with the internet, fewer people are using regular mail.
