Obese people at risk with X-rays?

July 1, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
Concerns are being raised about the higher levels of radiation given to overweight and obese people by X-rays.Overweight and obese patients are usually given higher than normal doses of radiation to get usable X-ray images.

Exposure can be up to 40 times as much for an overweight patient than a slender person.

Scientists say more research is needed on the long-term effects of such high doses.

The study is reported in the July issue of Radiology.
