Ventura Co. brush fire burns 8,500 acres

FILLMORE, Calif. The fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m. at Highway 126 and Cavin Road and as of Tuesday night, had scorched about 8,500 acres. Firefighters had the fire 10 percent contained Tuesday night.

More than 600 firefighters from Ventura County Fire and Los Angeles County Fire have responded to the scene, and authorities said more are en route. As many as 1,200 firefighters in total are expected to be on the blaze by Wednesday morning. On Tuesday night, there were 84 fire engines, 18 fire crews, eight air tankers, 12 helicopters and nine bulldozers all fighting the blaze. Two injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though a preliminary report pegged the cause as "spontaneous combustion of manure."

Mandatory evacuations have been issued in the area north of Broadway and east of Grimes Canyon, which is a rural area north of the city of Moorpark, and for the Meridian Hills area as the fire moves in a southwestern direction. Affected residences include neighborhoods south of Broadway Road west from Walnut Canyon Road to Balcom Canyon Road. Residents in the affected areas can expect a reverse 911 telephone call alerting them to the evacuation orders.

  • North of Broadway Rd., East of Grimes Canyon
  • Meridian Hills area
  • Neighborhoods south of Broadway Rd.
  • West from Walnut Canyon Rd. to Balcom Canyon Rd.
Large animals can be evacuated to the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Small animals can go the Animal Regulation at the Camarillo Airport.

Voluntary evacuations have been issued south of the city of Fillmore, bounded by Bardsdale Avenue and west of Grimes Canyon intersection.

An evacuation center has been set up at Goebel Senior Center, 1385 East Janss Road in Thousand Oaks. Large animals can be taken to the Ventura County Fairgrounds, 10 Harbor Blvd.

Flames are being whipped by the Santa Ana winds in hot and dry weather conditions.

Due to the fire, the following road closures have been ordered:

  • Grimes Canyon North at Bardsdale
  • Broadway at West Grimes
  • Walnut Canyon at Broadway and Happy Camp
  • Sheckell Road north of Broadway
  • Guiberson Road at Grimes Canyon
