Irvine student arraigned for murder

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Brian Hughes Benedict, 35, did not enter a plea and remained in custody, held on $1 million bail. He faces 50 years in prison if convicted.

He's charged in the killing of his ex-wife, Rebecca Benedict, 30, back on Sept. 13, just outside a student and family housing complex on campus.

Authorities say Brian Benedict, a graduate student at the university, was involved in a custody dispute with the victim.

Police say when she arrived on Sunday to pick up their four-year-old son, the pair got involved in a verbal altercation, and he followed her outside, opening fire.

The victim was hit several times and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say several people witnessed the shooting and detained Benedict until police could arrive.

The boy was not hurt.

It was the first homicide in campus history.
