Submissions wanted for Ventura Music Festival

November 24, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
Organizers of the Ventura Music Festival Student Jazz Competition are looking for local high school students from Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties to send in their entries and compete for a chance to play live at the event.Five young musicians will vie for the chance to play with Latin music legend Pete Escovedo at the third annual Student Jazz Competition on Jan. 10.

The live concert competition is a bit of a departure from previous years when students submitted CDs of their work and judges selected a winner. This year, the process is a little different. Judges will pick five finalists from the submissions. The Cds must contain only one instrumental song.

The five finalists will perform two songs live on stage. The winner of that competition will later perform on stage with Escovedo and receive a $500 scholarship.

Deadline for submissions is Dec. 18.
