Black bear wanders loose in Monrovia

MONROVIA, Calif. The /*210 Freeway*/ was briefly shut down because the bear was close to the freeway.

There were no injuries, and despite the road closure there were no traffic incidents.

The bear eluded authorities for about four hours. The bear ran through a /*Caltrans*/ maintenance yard and scaled a fence to get into a wash near Huntington Drive.

Once inside, the bear got up on its hind legs and appeared to be looking for a way out. The bear became groggy and eventually passed out after game wardens hit the bear with the tranquilizer dart.

The bear was safely captured before being returned to the wild, authorities said.

Authorities say the bear was about 2 1/2 miles from the forest, and may have wandered down through the wash.
