Junipero Serra HS named School of the Year

GARDENA, Calif. Junipero Serra High School has become the smallest school ever to be named State School of The Year by Cal-Hi Sports. The Cavaliers also are the first State School of the Year from the Los Angeles South Bay region since El Segundo for 1965-66.

In winning State School of the Year honors, the Serra Cavaliers beat out perennial powerhouses Mater Dei, in Santa Ana, and Archbishop Mitty, in San Jose -- both of which are more than twice the size of Serra, which has an enrollment of just under 600 students.

At the national level, ESPN has ranked Serra fourth among all high schools for multi-sport excellence.

This year, the Cavaliers won two CIF state titles in football and basketball, and nearly won a third in track & field. They also won five section titles in the highly-competitive CIF Southern Section. Additionally, the girls' basketball team reached the CIF Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals.
