L.A. first responders get $155M federal grant

LOS ANGELES /*LA-SafetyNet*/ would be accessible to every first responder in the county and would allow multiple agencies to respond to a wide variety of emergencies.

"This large investment puts much-needed 21st century technology in the hands of the men and women we entrust our lives with every day," Villaraigosa said in a statement.

The money comes from the federal stimulus program through the Department of Commerce.

According to the mayor's office, the $154,640,000 grant is the largest ever awarded to the Los Angeles region, which has more than 80 public safety agencies and approximately 34,000 first responders.

LA-SafetyNet would provide computer-aided dispatch, real-time video streaming and patient tracking, among other broadband-specific applications.
