Lawyer: Elizabeth Smart abductor mentally ill

SALT LAKE CITY The trial resumed in Salt Lake City Monday after it was put on hold pending an appeal to change the location to Denver. That request was denied.

/*Brian David Mitchell*/ is accused of kidnapping Smart from her bedroom in 2002 when she was 14.

Monday morning Smart recounted to jurors that she remembered being awakened with a cold knife to her throat.

Mitchell's lawyer defended him, not disputing the facts but arguing that Mitchell was influenced by mental illness and extreme religious beliefs that made him believe he was doing God's bidding.

Smart was found with Mitchell in 2003 when drivers identified her walking in a Salt Lake City suburb.
