BG's Cooper Standard plant under review

BOWLING GREEN, OH Cooper Standard announced it is in the process of doing a corporate review of one of its plants in BG.

The hose plant is along Van Camp Road near the intersection of St. Rt. 25. A company spokeswoman emphasized a final decision has not been made whether or not to close the plant.

The plant makes low-pressure hoses for four of the biggest car companies: Ford, Chrysler, GM and Nissan.

Keeping costs down in the highly competitive auto market is obviously a crucial part of staying in business. The same parts that are made in Bowling Green are made at other Cooper Standard plants so the review will study the overall cost of manufacturing at the plants.

The spokeswoman said, "You can only cut back so much on concessions and then it gets back to the point of productivity and then it gets to which plant is more efficient with productivity and where can we get the most for our employment dollar."

About 200 people work at the plant and they were all told about the corporate review today.

Cooper Standard has another plant in Bowling Green that makes rubber seals and trim. About 230 work there but according to the company spokeswoman that plant is not part of the corporate review.

At this point there is no word on a timeline for the review.

Cooper standard has about 19,000 employees and 75 plants worldwide. The company is based in Novi, Michigan and was originally part of Cooper Tire and Rubber based in Findlay.
