Injured LA deputy recovering after surgery

LOS ANGELES The wounded deputy, 27-year-old Mohamed Ahmed, has been at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center for the last few days.

Officials said the deputy remained in critical condition after being shot in the face on Tuesday night during a shootout with a suspect in /*East Los Angeles*/.

Sheriff's officials have said Ahmed was due for surgery for serious eye injuries suffered when he was shot in the face during a struggle with 37-year-old suspect Nestor Torres.

Authorities said Ahmed, a deputy-in-training, was on patrol with another officer when they got into a scuffle with Torres.

Ahmed's training officer shot and killed Torres, according to investigators.

Salam Al-Marayati of the Muslim Public Affairs Council has been with Ahmed's family at the hospital, and he said Ahmed went through a nine-hour surgery.

"He's struggling for every breath. But according to the doctors and the officials here, he's in stable condition. We're here to pray for him," said Al-Marayati. "We're a loving family. All the family members are there around the bed. We made a prayer for him, and he was touched by it."

Al-Marayati said Ahmed wrote "Thank you sirs" on a notepad.
